Chiropractic Care in Pregnancy

Mar 11, 2026 | Blog

Pregnancy is an incredible journey, but it also places significant physical demands on a woman’s body. As a baby grows, the spine, pelvis, and posture naturally adapt to shifting weight and hormonal changes. While these changes are normal, they can often lead to discomfort, imbalance, and tension. At our clinic, we offer specialised pre-natal chiropractic care, including the Webster Technique, to support mothers throughout every stage of pregnancy.

Supporting Your Changing Body

During pregnancy, hormonal shifts – especially the increase in Relaxin, allow ligaments to soften in preparation for birth. While necessary, this can also contribute to pelvic instability and spinal misalignment. As the abdomen expands and the center of gravity shifts forward, the lower back curve increases, often leading to discomfort.

Research Data

In fact, research shows that approximately 56% of pregnant women experience low back pain. Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain is also common, with reported incidence ranging widely. Higher-quality studies suggest that between 16% and 25% of pregnant women experience pelvic girdle pain, though some studies report rates as high as 76%.

Common Symptoms

Common symptoms can include:

  • Low back pain
  • Hip discomfort
  • Sciatic nerve irritation
  • Pelvic pressure
  • Postural strain

Gentle chiropractic adjustments help restore proper alignment of the spine and pelvis, reducing stress on joints and muscles. When the body is balanced, many women experience improved comfort, mobility, and overall well-being. Maintaining pelvic balance during pregnancy may also allow babies more space to move into an optimal position for birth. When the pelvis is aligned, surrounding muscles and ligaments function more efficiently, helping to create an ideal environment for the baby’s development.

The Hidden Risks of Self-Cracking

Can Chiropractic Help with Breech Position?

A common question we hear is whether chiropractors “turn” breech babies. Chiropractors do NOT manually turn babies. The medical procedure that is used to physically reposition a breech baby is called an External Cephalic Version (ECV) and is performed by obstetric providers in a hospital setting.

Chiropractic care takes a different approach. Rather than directly manipulating the baby, we focus on restoring balance to the mother’s pelvis and sacrum. Allowing the mothers body to function as optimally as possible. That in turn provides greater freedom for the baby to assume the best possible position on their own.

The Webster Technique

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment designed to improve pelvic alignment and neuro-biomechanical function during pregnancy. This technique addresses sacral alignment and reduces tension in pelvic ligaments and muscles. By restoring balance in the mother’s body, chiropractic care supports normal physiological function and optimal fetal positioning.

Nervous System and Birth Preparation

The spine protects the nervous system, which co-ordinates communication between the brain and every system in the body, including the reproductive system. Chiropractic care focuses on reducing skeletal tension to in turn, reduce nerve interference. This can help the body adapt to pregnancy with less stress and greater efficiency. Many clients report reduced back and pelvic pain, improved posture and balance, better sleep, increased mobility, and greater comfort during daily activities. Some women also find that maintaining pelvic balance contributes to smoother labour experiences, although each birth is unique.
