Common Myths About Chiropractic Care
When most people think about chiropractic care, three things usually come to mind: neck pain, back pain, and migraines. While these are certainly areas we help with, they only represent a small part of what chiropractic care is actually about.
At TOPCHIRO, we regularly see clients experience improvements beyond pain relief, such as better sleep, enhanced mood, and even improved sports performance. These changes don’t just affect the body; they elevate overall quality of life, both physically and mentally.
Over time, I’ve noticed that many new clients have experienced similar misconceptions. Let’s break down some of the most common myths.
Myth 1: Chiropractic is just “randomly cracking” the spine
It is easy to see where this idea comes from, especially after watching viral reels on Instagram or TikTok! If I weren’t a chiropractor, I might believe it too.
There is a massive difference between manipulation and a chiropractic adjustment. Manipulation can often be unspecific and may involve moving joints just to produce a sound. A chiropractic adjustment, on the other hand, is precise and intentional. Based on a thorough assessment, it targets a specific vertebra or joint to address the root cause of your issue.
To someone watching a video, they might look similar, but the intent is totally different. One is about finding the exact segment that needs to be addressed, the other is guesswork. We focus on the first one.
Myth 2: Chiropractic is only for neck and back pain
While pain relief is a common reason people visit our clinic, our primary focus is the nervous system.
Why does that matter? Because your nervous system is the “master controller” of every system in your body, from your digestion to movement, to stress responses like (“fight or flight“) and recovery.
Our bodies are amazing – they have an incredible, natural ability to adapt, self-regulate, and heal. But that process can be disrupted by what we call the “Three Ts”:
- Thoughts: Stress, emotions, and anxiety.
- Toxins: What we eat, drink, or environmental pollutants.
- Trauma: Injuries, accidents, or even the physical stress of birth.
Our role is to support optimal nervous system function so your body can perform at its best. Many people are surprised to discover that issues they have accepted as “normal” (like poor sleep, low energy or tension) can actually improve when the body is functioning properly.
Myth 3: It’s all about the “Pop” sound
A question I often hear is “Hans, can you do more adjustments today? I want to hear more pop sounds!”
I completely understand that the sound can be satisfying! But it’s important to understand what is really happening.
The “pop” is a release of gas from the joint space, similar to when you crack your knuckles. While it sounds impressive, the sound isn’t our goal. Our target is to correct the misalignment of specific spinal segments and reduce pressure on the nervous system. Whether there is a loud sound or a quiet shift, the specificity of the correction is what creates healing, not the volume of the noise.
Chiropractic is more than just pain relief; it is about supporting a healthier, balanced lifestyle through better nervous system function.
