The Hidden Truth Behind Your Pain: Cause vs. Effect

Mar 17, 2026 | Blog

During my recent trip home, I had the chance to check a few friends and family members. One of the most common questions I heard was: “Why is my pain on the right side, but you adjusted the left?” or “My knees hurt, so why did you adjust my low back?”

The answer lies in understanding cause versus effect. Pain is often the result of a problem, but not always the source of it. While pain signals that something in the body isn’t functioning well, it doesn’t always tell us where the underlying issue began.

The Gonstead Approach: More Than Just “Chasing Symptoms”

In the Gonstead Technique, chiropractors perform a detailed analysis of the spine to identify areas of dysfunction known as vertebral subluxations. These are spinal segments that are not moving or functioning as they should.

The Ripple Effect

The spine protects the nervous system. Dysfunction at a specific level can create stress on how the brain communicates with the rest of the body. Since the nervous system coordinates muscles, tissues, and organs, problems in one area often contribute to symptoms appearing elsewhere.

The Compensatory Cycle

Your body functions as a connected system. When one part isn’t working, other areas try to compensate to keep you moving. Over time, these compensations create stress in regions that were never the original source of the problem.

Understanding Your Body’s “Teamwork”

Think of it like a team. If one player isn’t doing their job well, the rest of the team has to work harder to make up for it. For example:

  • Shoulder or neck tension may be related to dysfunction in the mid-back.

  • Knee discomfort may sometimes be influenced by mechanics involving the pelvis or lower spine.

Rather than chasing symptoms from place to place, the goal is to identify and correct the underlying spinal dysfunction as precisely as possible. This approach can sometimes take a little more time, because the priority is careful assessment and specific adjustments rather than focusing solely on short-term symptom relief.

Our Focus: Optimal Function

As chiropractors using the Gonstead Technique, our focus is on detecting and correcting vertebral subluxations that may interfere with the normal function of the nervous system. We do not diagnose or treat medical conditions. Instead, we aim to restore better spinal function and support optimal nervous system performance so the body can operate as efficiently as possible.

When the spine and nervous system function better together, people often notice improvements not only in pain, but also in overall movement and function.
